Retirement life may last 20 or 30 years. Many investors’ financial plans, however, were created decades ago and never updated. Here’s how we helped a couple refresh their plan.

Opportunity

We were approached by a couple who had both had successful careers and had worked hard to retire early. They had been aggressive stock investors, which fit their risk profile. But investing aggressively for growth was a poor fit as they became young retirees with a need for greater income.

Solution

We took a holistic approach to reshape their financial plan. We reallocated their investment portfolio from 90% equities to 60% to provide greater income and less volatility. We created a Donor-advised Fund to establish a legacy plan as benefactors for their church, and to minimize taxes. We also updated the beneficiaries in their will.

Outcome

In the two years since we began working together, our clients have maintained their lifestyle. They renovated and enlarged their house to entertain their grandchildren. The couple are now educated investors who understand their financial plan, assets, goals, and can be stewards of their legacy.
