Maintaining family wealth and assets from one generation to the next can be an emotional experience. This case study illustrates how we helped a caring son manage the estate of his frail and elderly parents.

Opportunity

The adult child of one of our longest-term clients, a husband and wife who had been with us for nearly two decades, came to us for counsel. His 80-year-old father, recently diagnosed with an aggressive, end-stage form of cancer, had a few months to live, and his mother, recently diagnosed with early-stage dementia, needed an advisor she trusted to define and carry out their wishes. Our collaboration was possible because we had built a long-term trusting and caring relationship with the parents.

Solution

We held many meetings with the son and his parents, during which we thoughtfully asked what was important to them and explained our suggestions. We worked with outside professionals to help set up a power of attorney so the son could act as his parents’ guardian.

Outcome

The mother is happy, confident, and comfortable knowing that her son and the advisor they share provide experienced and ongoing advice about their finances. We now also manage the son’s investment portfolio for his family’s retirement, education, and estate plans.
